During a fire emergency, firefighters can quickly connect their hoses to the hydrant outlet to access a pressurized water source. This enables them to effectively combat the fire at its source, suppressing flames and preventing the fire from spreading to nearby structures.

Fire hydrants are color-coded to indicate their water flow capacity. The color-coding helps firefighters quickly identify the most suitable hydrant to use based on the water volume required for the specific fire situation.

To use a fire hydrant effectively, firefighters must first open the hydrant valve using the operating nut. Once the valve is open, water flows through the hydrant and into the attached fire hoses. Firefighters can then direct the water flow towards the fire using the nozzle on the end of the hose.

Proper maintenance and regular testing of fire hydrants are essential to ensure their functionality during fire emergencies. Municipal fire departments and water authorities are responsible for inspecting and maintaining fire hydrants to ensure they are in good working condition.
